TELL ME ABOUT DENTURES:

Considering tooth replacement? There are many reasons to replace a missing tooth. Tooth replacement is an time-sensitive and critical consideration for you. Read more on why tooth replacement is important for you.
The most common forms of tooth replacement are removable dentures, bridges and implants. Removable Dentures are the most well known form of tooth replacement. They can be made as a partial denture, or a full denture. A complete denture replaces an entire arch. A partial denture is where as little as one tooth is being replaced. Dentures can also be made from 3 different materials. Acrylic, Chrome Cobalt and Valplast.
Acrylic: The most affordable material that a denture can be made from is Acrylic. It is worn over the gums and is held in place by a suction fit and clasps. There are various advantages of opting for the Acrylic denture including its ease of fit and adjustability. This material however can damage the natural teeth around which the denture is fit.
Acrylic dentures are a good option in the event that you intend to add teeth to the denture in the future. They look natural with their pinkish gum like colour and colour matched false teeth. The downside of these dentures is that they are bulkier as they rely on suction for adhesion.
Valplast: A superior alternative to the traditional type of Acrylic denture is the flexible Valplast denture. This type of denture also relies on suction to a certain extent, although mainly relies on it elastic properties and its fit between the remaining teeth. This material is less bulky and maintains strength even in its thinnest areas. They are also significantly lighter than the other materials.
Chrome Cobalt: This is the least bulky of the materials. Chrome Cobalt dentures are more versatile and are often the most durable. The false teeth are created and attached to a Chrome Cobalt framework. The technicians and the dentists require great skills to manufacture this denture due to its intricacies.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Allow us to walk you through the process and what you can expect from your appointments. From the consult to the post treatment care, we will be here to make sure we can answer all your questions, and take you from the drawing board to the custom creation of your brand new replacement tooth/teeth.

Visit 1:

Your first visit will be a consultation. During this appointment the dentist will assess the suitability of your case for a denture. The dentist will also discuss the potential risks, outcomes and even discuss other options that may also be suitable. A couple of radiographs will be required to further assess the bone health.

Visit 1A:

Dentures do not change colour and as such, you may wish to get teeth whitening prior to commencing this treatment. Your Denture will be colour matched to your adjacent teeth so choosing a colour is an important stage of the process. Teeth whitening involves 3 cycles of a locally produced Carbamide Peroxide gel to your teeth which is activated using a high intensity light. See more on Teeth Whitening here.

Visit 2:

During this visit, the dentist will remove the tooth and any fragments to prepare the site for healing prior to the implant appointment. The fee for this visit ranges from $133 and depends on the complexity of the removal.

Visit 3:

Your dentist will spend time with you to design the denture and decide which material best suits you. You will also get impressions taken of your teeth and of your bite. This is to ensure the denture is custom manufactured to your needs.

Visit 4:

Once the denture design is created by the lab, your dentist will arrange for you to try the “partially manufactured” denture in the mouth to allow for any adjustments prior to completion. The details of additional requirements are sent back to the lab along with the incomplete denture.

Visit 5:

Your denture is ready. In this visit, your dentist will fit the denture and check for any in chair adjustments. Congratulations! You have your new teeth and will be able to take them home today. Your denture will discuss care instuctions for your denture to ensure you get the most out of it.

Visit 6:

You will be booked for a review appointment to ensure the denture is comfortable for continued use. It is expected that some additional adjustment may be required once you have tested the denture after having gotten acclimatised to it and used it while eating.

Visit 7:

You have had your denture for about 3 months now and you may be required to visit for a reline appointment. This is because your gums and bone may change over this time while it gets used to this foreign denture. As we age, as your lifestyle and oral environment changes, you will need to bring your denture in for adjustments along the way. In some cases, you may be able to add additional teeth to it should it be required.
